Yep. There are 5 “NewJobs” up there because today is my 5th busy day at my brand new job!
Right now I’m training to do something I never, ever thought I would do; I’m learning how to operate a switch board. Of course, it’s a little more high tech than the switch boards of old…
…but it still requires some mental gymnastics and quick reflexes. In addition to learning the switchboard, my main job is to get to know everyone in the building by name and face, so I can send the right people the right calls. In my opinion, this task is a little more daunting than the switchboard, but I’m working on it.
This receptionist job is entirely unlike the last 3 jobs I’ve held. I can tell there will never be a dull moment, since there are a million things for me to do. Taking packages, answering phones, signing in visitors, refilling office supplies, running around like a headless chicken…it’s a lot of busy work with very little downtime.
Even as I’m continuing to train, I can tell that this job requires me to use a completely different part of my brain than the writing jobs that I’ve held. Also, unlike my last job where I worked at home, I have to wear pants.
Sorry for the week of silence. Once I’m more accustomed to my new schedule, I will try to blog more regularly.
Ciao for now, lovers!
